Biophysics is a science that studies biological phenomena through the methods of physics and physical chemistry. It covers phenomena at all levels of biological organization, from the biosphere to biomolecules. Scientific problems being actively researched by biophysicists include:

• How do polypeptide chains fold into stable, functional three-dimensional structures?
• How do the physical properties (e.g. permeability, elasticity) of cellular membranes depend on their molecular composition?
• How are the myriad biochemical processes taking place in a cell coordinated so as to achieve effective performance?
• How do organisms sense their environments?
• What mechanisms mediate ecosystems' responses to environmental change?
